Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Malian international Ibrahima Kone, who currently plays for UD Almeria on loan at Saudi Pro League side Al-Okhdood. According to a report from Africa Foot, Kone is one of the players being targeted by Leeds as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of next season.
Kone, 25, has had a somewhat nomadic career, playing for several clubs in Europe, including Norwegian outfits Haugesund and Sarpsborg 08, as well as French side FC Lorient. He joined Almeria from Lorient in a reported €9m deal, but his first season with the Spanish club was marred by a five-month injury layoff due to a fractured ankle.
Despite this, Kone has shown his goal-scoring prowess, netting 14 times in 57 games for Lorient, including nine goals in the 2022/23 campaign. He has also represented Mali 19 times, scoring 13 goals.
The report from Africa Foot suggests that Almeria have set a release clause for Kone at approximately €10m, which could be a stumbling block for Leeds. However, the Whites are reportedly keen on signing the striker, who would provide a physical presence up front and offer a different dimension to their attack.
Kone’s loan spell at Al-Okhdood has seen him score three goals in 15 appearances, although he has not featured in any of the club’s last six Saudi Pro League encounters.
Leeds are likely to face competition for Kone’s signature, with other clubs reportedly interested in the striker. However, the Whites’ recruitment team will be aware of Kone’s talent and potential, having previously signed Largie Ramazani from Almeria for a reported £10m in the summer.
Ramazani has been a success at Leeds, registering six goal contributions in 24 Championship appearances. If Kone were to join the Whites, he would likely be expected to make a similar impact and help the team achieve their goal of promotion back to the Premier League.
