Gary Bennett, a former Sunderland player and current pundit, has expressed his thoughts on the recent performance of Eliezer Mayenda, a 19-year-old striker who has been making waves at the Stadium of Light.
Mayenda started alongside Wilson Isidor in Sunderland’s 1-1 draw against Preston North End on Tuesday night, but was substituted in the second half, much to the surprise of fans and his own frustration.
Bennett, speaking on Total Sport after the game, highlighted Mayenda’s body language after being brought off, stating that he didn’t look happy at all. “I thought he worked hard. He did look a threat at times. But just look at the body language, especially when he was substituted, he was not happy. He was not happy,” Bennett said.
Mayenda has been one of the stories of Sunderland’s season, scoring seven goals and providing five assists in just 17 starts. His form has been impressive, and he has shown that he has a lot to offer the first-team and the starting XI.
Michael Graham, a Sunderland journalist, has also praised Mayenda’s season, outing him as one of the stories of the campaign. “Seven goals and five assists now for Eliezer Mayenda from just 17 starts this season. Mayenda’s frustration at being substituted against Preston is understandable, especially given Isidor’s miss and lack of impact in the game. Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris will have a dilemma in picking between Mayenda and Isidor for the upcoming game against Coventry City on Saturday.
The 19-year-old Mayenda has shown that he has the potential to be a key player for Sunderland, and his frustration at being substituted is a testament to his desire to succeed and make an impact on the pitch.
