Former Scottish referee Steve Conroy has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Vaclav Cerny’s water-spraying incident at Celtic Park during Sunday’s Glasgow Derby. Conroy believes that the Scottish Football Association (SFA) will be forced to take action against Cerny, despite the refereeing team not dealing with the incident at the time.
Speaking on The Ref’s View podcast, Conroy stated that disciplinary action is inevitable, saying: “You wonder what would be the sanction – something will happen to him, obviously… He will get some sort of sanction, but that wasn’t the refereeing teams’ call.”
Conroy explained that match officials would have been focused on the pitch and ensuring the goal was legitimate rather than monitoring player celebrations in the technical areas. However, he insists that the SFA must act, although he is unsure what the punishment will be.
