Kasper Schmeichel Receives Backing from Danish PFA After Vicious Media Attack
The Danish Professional Footballer’s Association (PFA) has come out in support of Kasper Schmeichel after the Celtic goalkeeper was subjected to a scathing attack by a Danish journalist. The article, written by Anders Olsen and published in Ekstra Bladet, was widely condemned for its personal and vitriolic tone.
Schmeichel, who has been in impressive form for Celtic this season, was criticized for his performance in Denmark’s 5-2 loss to Portugal in the Nations League. However, the PFA felt that Olsen’s article crossed a line, with director Michael Sahl Hansen calling for the journalist to apologize for his “distasteful” and “wrong” comments.
Hansen stated that Olsen’s article was “completely wrong” and that it was “distasteful to try to degrade a player in that way.” He also criticized the journalist for using “fat-shaming” language and for drawing parallels between Schmeichel’s performance and a serious illness.
The PFA director emphasized the importance of healthy debate and discussion in Danish football, but stressed that personal attacks and vitriolic language have no place in the sport. He called on Olsen to apologize for his comments and to reflect on the impact of his words.
