Rangers Takeover: Andrew Cavenagh to Inherit Rising Costs from Unruly Fans

American tycoon Andrew Cavenagh, who is leading the takeover charge of Rangers, will have to contemplate the rising costs accumulated by the club’s unruly fans. This comes after the club released a hard-hitting statement vowing to take action against fans responsible for racist and discriminatory behavior.

The statement was released after UEFA charged Rangers for a banner unveiled by the Union Bears during the Europa League clash against Fenerbahce. The banner was deemed “racist and/or discriminatory,” and UEFA threatened to close the Copland Road Stand for a future game.

Rangers vowed to hit the culprits with lifetime bans and also revealed that those groups responsible for the use of pyrotechnics in the recent derby clash with Celtic will be directly impacted by the 500 ticket reduction issued in a different sanction from the SPFL.

The club’s fans were also warned to behave ahead of the clash with Dundee on Saturday, after a previous incident two years ago where Rangers fans put on a huge pyro show at Dens Park, resulting in the game being halted after it triggered a smoke alarm in the stadium.

According to Hugh Keevins, Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe’s 49ers Enterprises will be keeping tabs on the rising costs accumulated by the punters. Keevins wrote that every fine Rangers receives, such as the latest one from UEFA, goes on to the bill that 49ers Enterprises will inherit if they go through with their takeover of the club.

The debts that Cavenagh has to contemplate paying before signing off on a final settlement could be described as being not inconsiderable already. Keevins noted that no wonder lifetime bans for incorrigible fans are now being thrown about as Rangers try to tidy up the house for the prospective buyers.

The club’s fans have been described as the “strongest asset” by Rangers, but when a reckless minority engages in delinquent actions, something radical has to be done. A full stand being closed if fans breach the terms of UEFA’s suspended sentence within the next two years is hardly a help for those intent on rebuilding the club while putting its financial affairs in order.
