Former Sunderland striker Marco Gabbiadini has advised midfielder Jobe Bellingham to avoid joining Chelsea, citing concerns about the teenager’s potential playing time and development at the London club.
Gabbiadini, who played for Sunderland from 1991 to 1994, expressed his concerns during an appearance on BBC Radio Newcastle’s Total Sport. He stated that Chelsea’s large squad and significant spending in the transfer market could hinder Bellingham’s progress, making it difficult for him to establish himself as a regular starter.
“I think it’s a problem, it’s a Premier League problem,” Gabbiadini said. “He’s been playing brilliantly, and you can understand why teams are interested in him. But does he want to be playing in Premier League football yet? It’s a big step, and you’ve got to get it right. It’s really difficult.”
Gabbiadini pointed out that several players have joined Chelsea in the past, only to struggle for playing time and ultimately move on to other clubs. He mentioned Danny Drinkwater as an example, suggesting that Bellingham could face a similar fate if he joins the Blues.
“That’s why I think so many players like his brother [Jude Bellingham] go to these German teams now,” Gabbiadini said. “They don’t have as big a squad, they don’t spend as much money in the transfer market. You would see that more as a better move for him than going to the Premier League, where they’ve got these huge squads and you can be second or third in line.”
Gabbiadini’s comments come as Sunderland faces a battle to keep hold of Bellingham, who has been linked with several top-tier clubs. While the Black Cats are keen to retain the midfielder’s services, it remains to be seen whether they can compete with the likes of Chelsea and other interested parties.
Ultimately, the decision will rest with Bellingham, who must weigh up his options carefully and consider what is best for his long-term development as a player.
