Sunderland defender Chris Mepham delivers ‘surprised’ verdict on Luke O’Nien penalty miss vs Millwall

Sunderland Defender Chris Mepham Reacts to Luke O’Nien’s Penalty Miss Against Millwall

Sunderland defender Chris Mepham has admitted that he was surprised to see Luke O’Nien step up to take a late penalty against Millwall on Saturday afternoon.

The Black Cats ran out 1-0 winners against the Lions at the Stadium of Light, thanks to a first-half volley from Trai Hume. However, they squandered a chance to seal the win when Romaine Mundle was awarded a penalty in the closing stages.

O’Nien took responsibility for the penalty but was thwarted by Millwall keeper Lukas Jensen, who easily saved the 30-year-old’s effort. This miss means that Sunderland have now failed to score any of their last four penalties.

Reflecting on the incident, Mepham said that he was “a little bit surprised” to see O’Nien take the penalty. However, he also understood the logic behind the decision.

Mepham’s comments came during a post-match press conference, where he also praised his team’s performance against Millwall. The win has boosted Sunderland’s promotion hopes, and Mepham believes that the team can build momentum from this result.
